This is my kind of place! Got a warm welcome from the bar lady upstairs, who told me where to go to see the band downstairs. What a cool place. Different areas and types of seating and I sat in my own little hutch in a comfy leather chair listening to groovy music for hours. All staff were helpful and the venue is great. Perfect for jazz and classical type music. Also a good selection of drinks and snacks including selection of cold meats, olives & toasties.

Best jazz venue in town, it's in the basement cellar of a gorgeous heritage listed hotel (Then Grand) right in the heart of the CBD and around the corner from the beach. Acoustics are fab, great jazz gigs three nights a week. Get there early to get a good seat.

A great atmosphere in this "speak easy" style bar. Drinks were great, was busy but not a massive wait for service and you could still have a conversation. The decor is spot on, feels very 1920s. Music to suit as well. Definitely worth a visit! If you do want to go upstairs to the bar, you can then enjoy the pub too. The do pints and have plenty of seating.

My man Max is the business when the subtle, 1% tastes and techniques are required for cocktails. His knowledge of whiskey is deep. The Underground has a edgy vibe, some would say Melbourne-ish. But I say this place stands apart and alone on style and personality.

The Underground is hands down my favourite bar in Newy. It's an authentic speak easy with weekly jazz performances. The lead barman 'Max' is polite, knowledgeable and dedicated to his craft. Be sure to try a nip of Montenegro. If I wasn't a broke uni student, I'd come here more often :)

Went for after dinner cocktails on a Friday evening around 9:30pm. Great vibe, cocktails were interesting and tasty, jazz DJ was great. Awesome spot if you want somewhere with cool vibes but quiet enough you can still chat amongst yourselves.

Found this little gem, best post dinner location so far in Newcastle. The music volume is just right so you can hear it AND talk to the people that you are with without shouting. Drinks were great and well priced. Service was quick and friendly. Booths were comfortable to sit in and with more space than other similar venues. Definitely worth a try.

This venue has been around for years but more recently the new owner completely renovated it into a stylish underground speak-easy style bar. A tight but atmospheric set up with live music ranging from Jazz to tribute bands. One of my favourite haunts in Newcastle! Superb drinks served professionally with friendly service. Gray food too!
